Alot of people driving cars just dont see you.I hate to stereotype but watch out for Volvo's, the people that drive them don't seem to care what any one else is doing, it's all about them. You were watching out and she didnt get ya, good.Keep alert and be safe.
Oh, it's amazing the number of drivers who could give a sh-t about people on motorcycles. Some are just clueless and have no idea we are there, others see us but dont give us space (I had a lady in a Honda Accord actually speed up on the highway so I couldnt merge despite my hand signal, turn signal, and the fact that we were both doing 65 MPH +....I was very closed to getting wacked from behind because she SPED UP!!!), others are so preoccupied with phones, eating, music, etc they have no chance of seeing us.
Others dont want to drive behind bikers, so they abruptly pass us causing more of a hazard. Not a ride goes by where I dont want to drag someone out of their cage and remind them of how careless they are.
No real answers other than to be aggressive and ready to avoid.
This is specifically mentioned in Patrick Hahn's book "Ride Hard, Ride Smart", which is about defensive/offensive riding on the street. He mentions Volvo drivers as "stream of conciousness drivers".
Sometimes stereotypes exist for a reason.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. IT WILL CHANGE THE WAY YOU RIDE!!
I see in the post that you said that you were the only two on the road. At that point I say screw it and let the person go before I do. I have seen way too many peopleget hurt at intersections, but the biker assumed that the car was going to stop or go straight because turn signals were an option on their new BMW that they skimped on because they opted for the Starbuck's maker in the dash. I've been honked at in intersections because I saw cars coming from opposite directions with distracted drivers. Just take the extra 2 seconds and let that person go and be done with it. I ride in Chicago everyday to work, rain or shine, so each day has it's own adventures. I find that a nice boot print in a driver's door works wonders to people that cut you off. It wouldn't hurt to get some more exprience by taking any sort of rider training course or practicing your defensive manuvers regularly in a parking lot.
That's not a bit suprizing what she did. Glad you didn't get caugh up in her crainalanalitis monuver. The same thing happened to me last week, only I was in my truck, A jacked up F150 that's big as a barge. that moron couldn't see me either. Sometimes I wonder how these people lived as long as they have. Always remember, we are invisible to them darn cagers, untill we do something dumb, like end up under one.
Same type thing happened to me last sunday... mine was a Black volvo 4 door full of people,i hadno stop sign but he did guy rolls up to stop looks right (?) only and just stands on the gas and turns left .no signal no attempt to full stop....saw him early and he just had that "i ain't stoppin" look about him so i slowed way down and had to dead stop nearthe middle of intersection. And he looks out the window at me as he rolls past my front end like "where the heck did you come from ? .... i was riding my wifes bike too ...man...that could've been ugly .. ALWAYS expect them to do the wrong thing ....sad but true
Sometimes I wonder how these people lived as long as they have.
Ya gotta wonder if some of these people had a chip implanted in their brain that reminds them to "Breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out"... it HAS to be the only reason some of them are still out there.

or maybe they are still alive because there's no "open season" on morons.
Just got back from lunch. Coming down back road, 45mph speed limit. Car coming out of a sub does a half-fast stop and pulls out right in front of me. I beep my horn quickly and she looks up and speeds off. People just don't look so you have to look for them. I knew she was going to pull out as soon as I saw the car. That's why I slowed down to 30mph before I reached where she pulled out.
Assume everyone is going to pull out in front of you. DON'T assume they see you.
