Default Carb rebuild

ordered a carb gasket rebuild kit for my 86 Sportster 883, never messed with carbs before and wondering what route to go with rebuilding this. Is there a “diy” on rebuilding a carb complete in the manual, if not how would one go about doing this with no prior knowledge... thanks!

The Factory Service Manual does have a section on rebuilding the carb ... sounds like you have a manual, just follow the steps. The carb is pretty simple and not much to mess up ... if I can do it, anyone can. Give it good cleaning with carb cleaner, take your time and follow the manual.

Follow the above advice. Maintain a super clean work area (including, of course, your hands). Check it for leaks with a remote fuel bottle before you install it. Be prepared to do several 'plug' readings (with brand new plugs). BTW, I recommend NGK plugs or maybe ND/Denso and nothing else.

Make sure you get the right rebuild kit. Most of us have the 1989 and later CV40 carb with the accelerator pump, your original 1986 is not the same. I believe it was referred to as a Keihin butterfly carb. The rebuild on yours should be super easy, just remember to record the numbers on the pilot and mainjet, so you can change jets if you wish and match proper air/fuel needs. Good luck.
