Default Forward control brake lever springy

I looked at a 2007/8 XL1200C that has forward controls fitted. The RH side foot peg and brake lever was springy and not solid when I put weight on it as compared to the left hand side and other bikes at the dealer for comparison.

I am now wondering if there is some damage to the frame mounting points or one of the bolts is damaged or the bracket is cracked.

I don't have the bike so I am not in a position to take parts off to look myself.

I am just wondering if anyone else has seen this or had the problem after their bike has possibly tipped over on the right hand side?

There is some evidence the bike has been over as there is scrape marks at the folding point of the foot peg.

May just be in need of a bleed? A little air in the system will make the brake feel spongey. Were there any other bikes with forwards to compare with?

Hi Graham, No disrespect but first sentence.

I might not have explained quite right. It is not the brake lever that is springy it is the mounting bracket to the frame. When applying weight to the foot peg it moves more than it should when compared to other bikes in the showroom.

Are you a member of Sportster Sickness? Are you going to the meet at Silverstone on the 14th April? We ought to meet up for a morning coffee or breakfast sometime perhaps?

Hey Andy From Sandy. I once had a guy in his car jump the green light and then stopped right in my path. I slid sideways into the side of his car on my left side, bounced of the side of his car and had my bike lay over on the right (brake) side but not that hard of a fall. It slightly twisted my handlebar and broke my right mirror as well as slightly bending my brake peddle, but everything else seemed fine with no other body damage that I could see. When using the rear brake, I too felt like it was a little "squishy" (as the brake peddle is mounted to the foot peg bracket. What I found could have been a real disaster in the future if I hadn't found the problem. Just the falling over on its side completely broke one of the "Grade 8" bolts that mount the bracket to the frame an the other one had a crack about half way through it. If I had not found that problem and had to really hit my rear brake really hard again, it may have broken off the second bolt and I would not have had any rear brake at all. Check those two bolts thoroughly! And let us know what you found out when you do find the problem.

Great driving by the jerk... not!

Check those two bolts thoroughly!
I have read a couple of posts about the bolts snapping. Looking at my bike the bolts are also the bottom engine mount so I hope the structure of the bike is not damaged.

Thanks for letting me know what happened to your bike. We have grade 12.9 steel bolts that may help alleviate the problem in the future.

I have made it a condition of the purchase that the problem be fixed. It is going to be a couple of weeks yet before I take delivery. I will let you know when I know. Cheers
