Default Ground wire?

Hello, so I’m in the process of swapping in a new motor into my 1998 sportster 1200s. Currently wirIng everything up. So there are 3 wires with eyelets coming out of the main rear harness. I know two of them are grounds that bolt up to one of the transmission mount bolts. This third wires has a smaller eyelet; is this an additiona ground? Or does this bolt up the starter post?

The thickness of that wire looks like a battery cable.

Do you have a wiring diagram? If it goes to the starter, it should connect to the battery (+) directly on the other end, the starter relay wire is much smaller to trigger the starter solenoid.

Where is your ground wire from the battery (-)? Those two grounded wires in the picture are too small. My 1991 has a pretty thick ground wire from the battery. It goes to a stud on the case, although you can use the transmission mount bolts. Your bike has a big external battery like mine, should be real easy to trace where they go, and where they are.

The main ground off the battery is not pictured, but it mounts on the backside of he frame to one of the transmission mount bolts... I can’t trace his wire back since the harness is all wrapped up... don’t really feel like unraveling the harness to trace this wire back to its origin.

is there another wire that mounts to the starter post other than then main wire off of the battery? If so, this must be it.

Could be starter post to main (30A) circuit breaker. That’s the main power from the battery to key switch. Also could be just another main ground. The wiring diagram shows three ground wires to the one grounding bolt.

So I am also trying to figure out where that wire goes, its currently hooked up to the post on the starter motor but I now believe the positive battery cable hooks up there. So where did you end up putting that wire?? Thanks!!

The large main wire from the positive side of the battery goes to the post on the starter.

Okay thanks, so does that black wire referenced earlier coming out of the harness go there as well?

There is only one wire that attaches to the start post and that's the one from the positive side of the battery. And, it can be black, I would follow the wire up and see where it goes. If it goes to the positive battery post that's the one you need. If it connects to the negative post then it is a ground that can be put on the trans mount bolt, there may be a #10 black wire splitting off from the ground that attaches to the frame. Only the one positive wire attaches to the lug on the starter.

This is how most of them are, I have never worked on a 98 Sportster before, but that is pretty much how all bikes are wired.
