I waited a year and 12K+ miles before I took a passenger (my wife). I also wrote down passenger guidelines for her ahead of time and went over them with her a few times before we rode. Just like you need to be able to control the bike, the passenger needs to know enough to not do things that will make it more difficult/dangerous. They need to have faith in your skills and judgment, and you need to justify that faith, because their safety is in your hands.

well i never owned a bike before or even rode one. i always said i would never own a bike unless its a harley, well twenty years later i got my harley i got it on march 26th and practiced on a permit for about four weeks then on april 20th i took my road test and passed.three weeks later i got the wife on the back. but i had to make sure i was comfortable first. now we ride all the time. oh and tom that avatar pic of yours[8D]dammm!! i find myself staring at it for 15-20 minuts. how am i supposed to get anything done? i didnt ride it solo first, trailered it home backed it off the trailer and rode my 5 year old son around the drive way ( i have a huge circle drive) didn't even give it gas though so that might not count didn't take my wife until 300 and that was down a block and back
