I got a gift card to my local HD dealer and want to pick up a windhsield for my upcoming road trip.
HD has an 18" windshield and a 14" windshield that is slightly wider.
I am 5'9" and ride a 2012 1200C. Sundowner seat and full face helmet.
Which one should I get? I can return it if I don't like it, but would rather get the correct one first.
Thanks for your advice.
It depends I would ask them if they can mount both to see how they fit on your bike with you on it.
The rule of thumb is u wanna be looking over through it or over it not between.
I have the 14 from the center curve to the top and get a lot of buffering while cruising at 70+.
Im 5/11 and the sheild ends just below my mouth so Im looking over it. I would love to have the extr 4 inches, but I bought mine on F/B for $30 so Im good at that price and its HD with quick release.
If your willing to shell out the 300+ to HD have them fit it to your liking it would be bad if u spend that cash and it doesnt suit your needs.
I would also suggest looking on F/B and let go
To see if you can find a good used one at half or even less than the cost.
If you have other HD stuff you want to buy with that gift card, I would humbly suggest a Memphis shades windshield. I really like mine, cheaper than HD, I think it's thicker, reall good fit and finish and a good quick release system. Available in multiple heights

I'm the same height as you and I've got the 14" windshield on my 2014 1200C. With the windshield raised to the top of my forks I can clearly see over it, but I do get buffeting in my face. I wear a full face helmet and only notice the buffeting when I have my face shield open at highway speeds. The 19" windshield would be more suitable if you don't like buffeting. Personally I don't mind it because at highway speeds I have my visor closed and you don't notice a thing. And I don't mind having better visibility over my windshield.
Im 58 as well and I have the 18 windshield. I can easily see over it and there is just a slight amount o buffeting at interstate speeds, but its not bad at all. I only use the windshield for longer trips where Ill be doing 70-80, so it not a big deal.
