Default Starter CLACK?! Before you panic.......

For weeks I dealt with with the initial starter pause thing with my '05 1200 Custom, then it would spin over and crank. Finally, nothing but a loud CLACK. Fully charged battery, bright lights, strong horn...but no starter action. PANIC TIME! But I decided to start with tightening all battery connections and BEHOLD....a loose battery positive post connection. Tightened it up and REJOICE, not even a pause upon cranking, just instant rumble. Lesson learned: Pay attention to what gear-heads suggest and start with positive and negative connections before you do a total meltdown.

Thumbs up

Well done for sorting that out. More common seems to be the frame end of the negative battery cable coming lose, but it sounds like you were lucky - and wise!

Same thing happened to me yesterday! About 3 days after I changed my bars. But first thing I checked was the battery terminal and of course it was loose! Prob from pushing around the wires all the time to make sure the side cover is on tight.

Yep, in fact, that ground was what I set out to check but the positive connection was so loose that there was actually a visible gap between the hex-head and washer. So far, that's the only issue that I've had for it's 31,000 miles except for a tiny speck of trash in the main jet. That also was a quick and easy fix. I guess what I'm suggesting to all riders is, before towing your bike to the dealership, stop, take a deep breath, read the manual, check this forum, and most importantly, DON'T PANIC! You guys are a huge wealth of knowledge! THANKS!!!

Btw, since I didn't have my fork bag back on yet, I rode around with a 11mm wrench in my front pocket to be safe. I'm sure some people thought I was digging my bike a little too much!!...But it was a pretty big wrench anyway, I'm sure the chicks were impressed!
