handirifle, the more I look at your shield, the more I wonder if the designers of it knew what they were doing! It would be feasible IMHO to reprofile the rear edges of the vertical brackets, to set the whole thing back on the bike, possibly enough to get the shield behind the headlight unit. They are way over-engineered! Or use those as templates for a freshly fabricated set, to make an even better job. Plain steel ones painted black would do just fine.

Just a FWIW, there is also a further forward kit for mid-controls that might be more comfortable if you
are tall or just feel like your knees are a bit bound up...

Gr
I think you are right. Need to scrounge some materials.

wknds
Thanks for that info. I did wonder how far forward those are, but tall I am not. I am 5'7" with only 29" inseam. I started my bike shopping thinking of a dual sport bike, but on those a 32" seat height is considered low.

Always wanted a Sporster any way so I said forget it on the DS idea. A 27-29" seat fit me perfect.

I can reach the forwards fine but it feels unnatural to me.

Ok for those that have experience riding with shields. This is my first. I studied the bracket very closely and am pretty sure I can shorten it from the bottom, cut off the top mount flush with the main bar, and redrill new mount holes.

Jowever, doing this will raise the shield slightly and make it more verticle. Currently it sits just below my eye level and slope back nicely. I don't want a sail up front and have read it should be below eye level. True?

I forgot to mention, the reason it would be more verticle, there is only about 3/4" of clearance between the shield and the speedometer.

handi,

You may elicit more responses if you start a newly titled thread on windshields. (as this one is something about controls on eBay-LOL)

Shield should be right at the bottom of your nose. Any higher, you're looking through it; any lower and it's a deflector and not serving it's (full) purpose.
They are easily cut however.

Well I did mention the shield in post one, but mostly, yes it is about the controls.

We're going 'off piste' here, relative to the original subject, sorry about that, but your photo above shows so much wrong with your shield. If you take a look at the photo of my bike in your other thread you can see that my qd clamps are closer together than yours, so if you imagine cutting off the bottom holes off your main brackets, then drilling fresh holes, you won't loose anything IMHO, but should be able to pull rearwards the bottom fixing points. With the qd brackets being a bit closer together you will get a bit more wiggle room vertically. There is plenty of meat higher up the brackets to reprofile the upper mounts and extend the holes forwards, or perhaps drill fresh ones.

Together we can crack this!

I did notice that, and have considered that idea. But the upper, has a rear tab the current hole is in. I would also have to cut and reshape that area to allow the shield to tilt. Reason is the tab will hit the clamp if left on there. This is one of those ideas where I have to be dead certain what I start, will work, or else I screw the pooch, and will have no shield at all, and cannot recoup any money from it.

I contacted Memphis Shades about this issue, and "surprise" they do not make a mount bracket for THAT shield that is supposed to work with the QD clamps. So I am in uncharted territory.

Finding brackets only has also proven to be a dry hole so far.

I am currently considering the fixes mentioned in the other thread, plus painting the inside of the brackets. At least to the top of the headlight.
