Default Exhaust Woes

bought the pipes on the left from a guy who said they came off a 48. I have a 72 and figured they’d mount right up. I had to order an adapter for the o2 bung as its 18 not 12 and also noticed the difference in the shape of the mount. I have new tapered exhaust gaskets, but am curious if this is even going to work. Help?

Can't help with your compatibility issues but I can warn you to be very careful around used exhaust wrap . This stuff is horrible as I recently discovered when I went to remove it from my pipes . If you disturb it there will be lots of dust that will work its way into your flesh , your clothes and anything else nearby . Your hands will itch for hours if you touch it so wear gloves , old clothes and a mask . By the way , what possessed you to buy pipes without being able to see what lies beneath the wrapping ?

Good looking out, that’s fresh wrap that I applied the other day. You are right though, the old stuff just turns to dust. Gloves and long sleeves for sure!

You should be fine, I have seen both types of flanges used. If you have any issues (which I doubt) you can always go with the Screamin Eagle flange gaskets, they are alittle thinner and some exhaust (like some Rineharts) require them.

Ive bought Cometic gaskets in case I ever need to remove my headers . They are of the mesh taper variety . I've watched a few YouTube vids and the secret to success seems to be to press them in with evenly distributed pressure. So what you need is a a cylindrical object of a diameter fractionally smaller than the gasket . So far the best thing I have found is , believe it or not , a plastic bottle used to contain Frylite . I don't know what country you are in but in the UK this is a one calorie frying spray used by dieters. This may sound a little unorthodox but it looks very workable to me .

Excellent idea! I had seen someone tighten the removed flange to slowly suck it down, but this seems easier and more effective. Thanks so much!

Well let me know how it goes, remember I haven't actually tried this yet . I would think that thoroughly cleaning the gasket seat and smearing a little oil on the surface might help too Good luck .

After all that preparation I didn't need anything to push the gasket in . It slipped in nicely with gentle finger pressure . So my advice is to buy Cometic gaskets . Simple as that .
