Can anyone help me out here . I've bought these things and I just can't get my head around how they are supposed to be fitted . The only way I can see us to bolt them directly ON TOP of my fender strut chrome covers but surely this will leave them scratched and dented if I tighten the bolts sufficiently to make them secure . Please forgive me for buying Chinese but I'm only going to use them for a week . Pictures of the same article fitted would be greatly appreciated. Mine's a 2004 XL 1200 R .
Bolt them like you stated but put some spacers behind it. Just a thought, I don't have them but need some. You could even put some duct tape or rubber washers to keep from scratching the chrome.

Thanks for the reply. I've actually put some rubber from some chopped gel grips behind the mounting plates . But now there's another issue . They don't stick out far enough to have any function at all . The saddle bags just rest on the shocks and these things do nothing at all . The only solution I can see is to re bend them . No doubt the paint will come off but I can always spray them again .
Good luck. I have been looking at some wondering if they would work. I'm not getting any soon but when I do will look closely. Post up how it turns out if you don't mind.
Maybe a better fitment as they hold the bags off the shocks. Just need to find correct version for year of bike.
Those would be perfect . I've already bought some but once again I have to confess that I bought inferior Chinese copies of this design . On the plus side , I complained to the seller because they supplied bolts that were actually shorter than the originals and they refunded me AND let me keep them . I've bought some longer bolts and I'll probably end up fitting them but they look horrible without the panniers. This is because instead of a flattened end where the shock bolt passed through them they have a half inch tube welded on the end so they stick out just beyond the actual supports . I just thought I'd give the simpler ones a go but they are less than useless.

Not well I'm afraid . Unless you remove the indicators and have the bags behind the shocks they are completely useless.
Can you remove the chrome trim piece and bolt it with the shock bolt?
No . I've figured out what's going on here . These things are for fitting bags AND carrying a passenger . To do this you would have to reposition the indicators and hang the bags BEHIND the shocks . This would allow the passenger to get their feet on the pegs . Thanks for the input , I'll work something out before I go touring . Next year I'll have something more permanent sorted out. The thing I'm learning about Harleys is that there are a dozen versions of every aftermarket accessory .
I just use a set of cheap throw over bags and let them rub on the shocks. They are starting to wear a little bit. I'm thinking about pop riveting some kydex to reinforce them where the shocks are causing the wear.
