Hey Folks..
I'm new to this forum and to Harleys.
I bought my very first bike last month which is a Cobalt Blue and Pewter 1200 Custom. I added the usual chrome parts like sissy bar, backrest, side plates, oil and battery cover, hand grips etc. I ride it as much as time allows but only have a little 800 miles on it. I am trying to enjoy it as much as possible but am having problems with it. I dont know if its a heat problem or fuel sys problem or what. But my bike just doesnt want to run smoothly at lower rpm's. Trying to ride through town at 30 - 40 mph is a nitemare. The bike hesitates, bogs, studders etc.
I noticed that when the bike is cool the problem isnt that bad, But after 20 miles or so, its horrible. I threw on a pair of Cycle Shack slash cut slip ons the other day and they only amplified the problem I am having. Today, I took them off because it got pretty embarrasing riding through town.
On that note, with the CS's on, I also noticed quite a bit of black smoke from the exaust and I even got some flames to shoot at with high revs. Keep in mind that I put the stock mufflers on for now and that the problems still exist.
Even though this is my first bike, and she's givin me some problems, I still love er.

I got the nasty black smoke and flame with the Cyclce Shacks on. I now have the stockers on and they dont show the smoke or flames cause they are so restrictive. But I know the problem is there. I took it to the dealer and got the usual answer. Buy the SE AC and Buy the "download" . I know its their job to make money for their bosses, but come on. In stock trim, the bike is not running correctly.
Flames will come out of a carb if the engine fires with the intake valves open, as well.
Since the engine advances even more at higher revs, and you say it's then that you notice the flames coming out of the pipes, then this makes it look even more like a timing problem to me; although timing too far advanced likethis would usually cause a backfire through the 'carb', the intake valve having still been opened a little when the spark plug fired. It could be your timing is too far retarded, and firing long after TDC, when the exhaust valves are starting to open.
I'd get the timing checked before you end up burning your valves and ruining your exhaust, if that is indeed what's causing the problem.

I'd take it back to the dealer, explain the problem, and see if they have a 'download' that will correct the problem with the EFI and/or timing issues.
So, you might want to take care of this problem pronto, and refrain from riding your bike as much as possible until it's fixed, IMO.
