The belt guard broke on my 2017 bike after just over 2 years.

It would take a slightly longer bolt but it is common practice to weld a washer on a plate like used here. I think there is room for it.

In my case the guard also rubbed against the belt pulley and scratched it all the way round.

Yeah, at my age not much does that but biking does. Looking forward to two weeks hitting Route 66 end to end in April. That should make me feel younger

Mine broke at 2200 miles. Surprised me as well. Everytime I'd slow up for a turn boinnngggg! Took me a bit to find it as well. Fairly common with these cheap Chinese parts. I put a thin stainless washer between the nut and new guard, which Harley covered under warranty.

I was expecting the new one to come yesterday but bound to take a bit longer this time of year.
I'll put that washer in that you mentioned when it comes and I can fit it.
Cheers and thanks for that
Have a great Christmas and safe riding in the new year.

I have Progressive 430 shock absorbers fitted to my bike. They come with spacers and so with the belt guard there is about 1 1/2 turns of thread showing out of the bolt. This is the minimum for maximum strength. With the way it is I would need a longer bolt if I wanted to fit a washer.

Dave you might want to check the bolt length on yours just to be sure.

The washer I used was really thin, almost wave washer thin. Just enough to keep that sharp edge of the nut from making contact with the guard.

I've completed the job but didn't have a thin washer, or one with a large enough hole for the bolt. If I can get hold of one I'll retrofit it as it might stop the crack happening again.
Thanks for the advice.
Cheers

If I can find another one in my bins (I've got 3 big bins filled with nuts and bolts and washers) I'll gladly toss it in an envelope, and mail it to you if you are CONUS. We already found another and added it to the old man's 06. It's definitely the corner of the nut digging in. I also considered back beveling the edges a bit but the washer seems to have done the trick. That guard is some seriously soft get brittle metal.

That guard is some seriously soft get brittle metal.
If you were just putting the belt guard on as in the case of the front bolt it only requires 10 ft-lbs of torque. With the double duty the bolt at the back is done up to at least 45 ft-lbs.

HD only needed to apply a little more thought and as best engineering jobs put a washer on as you have.

You can see they thought the best approach was to make the metal wider.

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/sport...l#post18774186

The difference can be seen in the width of the broken guard and the one now fitted.

Thanks for the offer, very kind and generous, but I think it'll be ok. As Andy from Sandy says I notice that the new one I got seems to be thicker metal so I'm hoping it'll last me to the end of my biking days. Only another 29 years left to go, I'm 71 now
