This weekend I went on my first long (for me) road trip, 250 miles round trip. First of all, I learned that I'm too old for drag bars. Second, my carburated 1200 Custom maxed out around 80 mph. It was nearly impossible to get the bike past that even after downshifting. I know Sporties aren't super fast but it should be able to surpass that speed easily, even if only for short bursts. Nothing. The bike runs wonderfully on the street. Any thoughts on what the issue is? Thanks.

compression check is the first mechanical thing Id do. Just because it will not go over 80 mph doesnt necessarily mean its the carb. Especially without any other details about what the bike does trying to accelerate past 80 mph
Is your throttle cable adjusted and opening the carb all the way? My little 883 does 80 without too much effort, I know a 1200 has a lot more in it than my bike.
