Simple Preload Question
First bike, so please bear with me (2005 XL1200C)
I just want to make sure I understand correctly: In setting the preload on my bike, the minimum setting should be used if the rider is lighter weight/no passenger, etc. and maximum should be used for the most weight/with passenger, etc., right??
Also, I weigh around 175 and ride solo most of the time; what do you guys think I should set the preload to initially (any input for those in the same category would help). Thanks all!

NewHarley - I agree rybakc, 2 or 3 will likely be best. You should try all five positions and see which one you like best. If you don't have the spanner wrench, they only cost a couple of bucks and it's real easy to change the preload. One thing that I've noticed is the 20+ pounds of additional weight you pick up by filling the gas tank makes a significant difference.What works best for me is to set the preload when I have a full tank of gas.
Yousay you ride solo "most of the time" - make sure you add more preload when you have a passenger. My wife and I together weigh about 375 lbs (mostly me!) - on the factory default first/lightest setting, the bike really wallows around and is very difficult to control. On the maximum/fifth setting, the bike seems more comfortable and stable than when I ride solo. With the extra weight of a passenger, the preload setting seems to have a big influence on how the weight gets shifted to the front tire when you brake.
