Points issue

IMy Freind has a 99 Sportster he has put points ignition in it. , When you tighten the bolt to the mechanical advance it loses all spark. you can loosen it and spark returns. when it is tight the advance works as it should. Any thoughts? I'm stumped.

Interesting. The advance unit is indexed on the cam with a shear pin and the advance unit bolt screws into the cam to hold it in place. When it's tight the advance unit works properly like it's designed to do. I would have to say that the lack of spark has nothing to do with that bolt being loosened up. Redo the points gap and follow the Factory Service Manual for the procedure.

If you're losing spark you're losing the ground. as that's what the signal is sending to the coil.
You're probably bending it out of line or proper gap when you tighten it.
