Ive been thinking about this being married with 3 kids one who is just starting drivers training a new bike is not in my near future so I need to make my sporty last. How long (mileage) should I go before I start thinking about winter rebuilding? I am talking with out any unforeseen major problems coming up that force me into it. We did a refresh this winter, drained all the old gas, rebuilt carb and what not since it had been sitting when I got it last season its an 05 with 13k.
I hear ya! I've got a little kid just over a year, student loans, blah blah, buying expensive toys isn't in the cards. Gotta make 'em last! Lucky for you Sportsters are super robust. Lots of people report no major rebuilds up to like 100,000 miles. Different for everyone, but if you maintain it and keep an eye on any small issues that may pop up, you're golden. Routine oil changes make a world of difference in the longevity of motors IMO. The only "major" thing that happens pretty often is the grenade ring in the clutch, you'll get warning signs on that before it goes, and it's pretty easy/cheap to fix. Yours is pretty low miles, you don't have to worry about anything for a while.
There's a dude I follow on IG who has a 04 Sportster with like 200,000 miles on it, he's out in Cali and it's the only way he commutes/gets around. He's putting his motor through the ringer and it keeps truckin'. Honestly the longevity and reliability of Sportsters was one of the main reasons I got mine. It's got 25k on the dial and runs as good as any new Sportster I've ridden.
entirely subjective
its an 05 so 16yrs old i like those years no biggie for me on newest but physics 101 is everything breaks down with time
how its stored is big stored outside 24/7 bad inside bedroom very good for it
sporsters love to rev good for them dont try to lug it in gear
service it
talk to it regularly... long hwy trips get big miles out of it as a whole 1/4 mile at a time less miles
High mileage bikes will have people who get on them and ride them a goodly distance every time. The engine will always be getting nice and toasty. Those same owners probably keep on top of the service intervals. They also probably don't mess and tinker as they are too busy riding.
If you only ride a few miles each time or keep starting the bike just so your mates can hear your loud exhaust expect the engine to require a rebuild much sooner.
