Noise when accelerating
New user to the Forum. Thanks for reading my post.
I have a '92 XLH. Recent complete rebuild to a 1200.
There is a "clacking" noise starting at 2500 (or so) RPM in every gear. It happens only when I apply throttle. Does not happen in neutral or when I pull in the clutch.
I thought it was something loose, like the tank, horn, etc. Everything external is as tight as can be.
If it's working hard, like going up a hill, the sound goes away but resumes when it levels out.
I'm at a complete loss.
I look forward to any help !!
Thanks
The other thing that might cause this is some of the holes that the engine mounting bolts go through might have become elongated and the engine is being pulled back in the frame under load .

what octane are u running ?
what is the compression ?
did you use the 883 heads or 1200 heads (there is a difference)
(on my 91 , I had to radius out my 883 heads to 1200 spec's,(way too much compression)
who punched out the motor ?
Well, I had the 883-1200 conversion done originally. Since the engine was rebuilt, it was done as a straight up 1200 with all 1200 parts.
I normally use 91 octane (just ask my wallet).
Unfortunately, I don't know the compression. I don't wrench myself so I'm at the mercy of others.
I'll investigate spark knock. It's not a ticking but a real "clack" that I always thought came from the primary.
Thanks again for your response!!
