Picked up a 2005 Sportster Custom. Doing some suspension and performance mods and wondering what options are out there for front wheels? Are most year hubs interchangeable?
It currently has the stock spoked 21” up front (which I actually like the look).
The 39mm diameter Showa brand forks have been stock fitment on Sportster models since 1988, so in theory you could fit a front wheel from any Sportster model with 39mm forks since 1988 to a later model. However the front axle has changed in that time, so the bearings are a different size. 2000 to 2007 front axles are 3/4" diameter and 2008 to 2021 front axles are 25mm diameter.
So 2005 Sportster forks will accept a wheel from a 2000 to 2007 model.
2008 - up wheel will also require the metric axle and bearings.

you determine the expanse of your options. That bike is your "Field of Dreams".
You can fo whatever you want there. No matter what anyone here says... your only limits are your own present ingenuity and risk aversion. 100% Malleable .... nothing on that bike is permanent. Nothing. Have fun
