Default Bags vs Back Rest

I've tried a couple of searches and not getting any clear results. I just bought a 2005 1200 Custom that has factory side bags. Am I correct in thinking the only way to add a backrest is to remove the side bags? With the factory bags it appears the signals are moved rearward to make room for the bag brackets. Which then causes the bracket for the rest to not fit correctly.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry I don't know any sportster that came with "factory" side bags.....perhaps a HD add-on. With respect to backrest, are you referring to rider backrest or passenger backrest....appears you are referring to passenger since your issue is with the brackets.

Maybe some pics may clarify the issues you are encountering.

Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for responding. Pictures go a long way for sure. These bags I believe came with the bike originally but I'm not positive. It looks like the signals are moved rearward to accommodate the rack for the bags. When I size up a back rest for the passenger seat it seems the holes it needs are taken up by the bag rack?
What bike and bags are in your picture? I would love to put hard bags on this bike.

The bike is a 2011 Sportster Low XL1200L that I no longer own.

The bags are Tsukaya hard saddlebags for Sportster
https://www.tsukayu.com/HardbagsforSportster.html

The docking hardware and the backrest are HD .
https://www.harley-davidson.com/us/e...Kit/p/53544-04

Both the backrest and saddlebags are quick-release.

I cannot see the mounting points for your saddlebags in the pic (too far away to see detail).

Sportster Leather Saddlebags - 90201329 | Harley-Davidson United Kingdom for fitting hardware and bag fitting instructions (scroll down and expand details section).

You will also find the fitting matrix document that shows what other parts are required for various options.

ETA: I was looking at the synthetic saddlebags, #90330-08, that fit with just two fixings at the top and no frame.

The Superlow XL1200T came with hard bags as standard that have just two fixing points shared with the docking hardware.
