...it seems like it would make a significant difference. Especially since I have a new seat on the way. However, I'm kind of hesitant as it's about $500 from HD. I don't want to cheap out
on controls, but at the same time, $500 seems a little steep. Anything else out there that works, or is it unrealistic to expect quality forward controls for less?
The H-D kits are pricey. You can get aftermarket, like this TC Bros. kit for less. You can order direct, JP Cycles or Jeff Bezos has them on his site. Or check out the forum sponsor, DK Customs. I think they still sell them.
Put up a wanted ad. Do it as a swap for your controls. Someone might not like forwards.
I definitely don't like them so I sold mine for Ł80 on eBay and bought some genuine Mid Controls for about the same money . There's no point in paying $500 when people are always swapping them around .
Too pricy at $500. I think the cycle parts guys like JP cycles may have American made kit. TC Bro kit is $180. Made in Taiwan.
You should be able to get it online from Surdyke for 15-20% less. I had HD install my forward controls when I bought my XL1200T, they took 10% off and knocked $25 off labor. Its not cheap but the quality is great and made a huge improvement over the stock mid-controls. At 510 its the right amount of stretch for me and works perfect with my Russel Day Long seat. This has turned into the best bike Ive ever owned.
I ordered a black set on Amazon and they are China made, but the quality is good. Harley is too much $$$. I did have to tap the rod for the rear brake cylinder into a course thread, but i had the necessary tools.
I like forward controls. A couple of things not much mentioned:
1. Much easier to push while seated. The pegs don't get in the way.
2. "Feels" lower- I can put my feet straight down.
3. Easier to locate the jiffy stand when parking.
I've had it both ways on my '04- forward controls are way better for me.

Thanks a ton for this! I had no idea Surdyke existed until you posted it; prices are great! Relative to the main HD site anyway...!
