Even if I do eventuallyget something bigger, I will never regret my decision to go withthe Sporty. I love the way it handles, and the throttle response is second to none. All themodel classes have their differencesby design for different styles of riding and riders. This doesn't make the Sportyany lesser a Harley than any other model. I get kinda' pissed when people downgrade my Sporty and thumb their nose at it with the whole mine is bigger than yours attitude. The fact of the matter is I didn't have to spend $20,000 plus on a bike to make a statement to the world, but if I did I would have bought two Sporties instead - one for the weekdays and one for the weekends. Maybe when I get a littleolder, get the kids off to college, and get tired of going fast, I'll step up to a touring model. The Sporty is where I'm at right now. I don't want a strippeddown Dyna that I can't afford to accesorize, ora touring model that I can't afford to put gas in. I'm perfectly happy with my own little piece of hog heaven. And it was all made possible by my little blue bundle of Sporty joy.
Put a chopper kit on it......it will be bigger, and look pretty dang good ! You can also put a 1200 kit in it, a 1250 kit, etc etc.....Lotsa things can be done to a sportster....And most are not really very expensive compared to other bikes......
"You will eventually get something bigger" is the same theme coming through all those junk e-mails that suggest the need for male organ size enhancement.
For a lot of people, "bigger is better" seems to be a value regarding everything but IQ.
I think a lot of guys trade in their Sportsters for big twins so that the wife will be more comfortable and more likely to go on road trips with them. In a perfect world I would have a Sotftail Deluxe sitting next to the Nightster!
I had a couple buddies tell me not to buy a Sportster as my first Harley, however I like the Sporty and went ahead and bought one, no regrets about having had a Sportster. They're great bikes, however I had my reasons for trading up to my Glide. I use my bike back and forth to work and the large hard bags are a plus. At the time I bought the glide I was married and my wife wasn't comfortable on the Sportster.
In the end in my eyes what ever bike an individual rides and likes they consider to be the best bike. I love my glide, however I also loved the Sporty and would never tell someone not to own one. If I could have worked it finacially I would have them both.

very well put. Bravo.... I was thinking something along those lines but you said it better.

Exactly... I bought the Sportster and my wife was hesitant about the bike. I really didn't know if it was something I would ride all the time or not. Well, wouldn't you know it, I ride all the time and she likes riding. So, coming across a good deal on my '05 Fatboy on E-bay, I jumped on it. It has a bigger seat, better back rest, and my wife likes that she sits a litte higher on it so that she can see what's going on ahead of us.
We still have the Sportster and she is going to take the MSF basic rider's course and give it a try herself. It makes it a little more attractive for her to try knowing we already have a perfectly good ride in the garage just waiting on her.
If it were just me riding, if the wife and girls didn't like riding, then I would be perfectly content with the Sportster as our only bike.
We just returned from a 200 mile ride today. The only problem that I have with the wife on the back is that I'm afraid she is going to sleep and fall off. The Sportster is a big, heavy bike and will take you hundreds of miles a day in comfort. I use a Harley pillow-top tandem seat and mid controls that keep my feet underneath me.
