Timing cover swap
I know the cams for 2000+ sportsters are different so am I correct in assuming the timing cover from a 2000 will not fit my 1996? Found a freshly chromed set of covers with rocker boxes from a 2000 for 240 dollars just not sure if the timing cover will fit
When you say timing cover, you mean the same thing as points cover yeah? Like these (linked)? The small plate with 2 bolt holes? Those are the same on Sportsters 1971-2003. If you're talking about the cam chest cover itself, those are specific 2000-2003. Sportsters points cover have vertically aligned mounting holes, big twins have horizontally mounting holes but the points cover plates are the same size for those even.

If your talking CAM COVER . . . DON'T DO IT!!!!! ALL Sportster cam covers are mated to the individual crankcase for perfect alignment by means of LINE REAMING THROUGH THE ENGINE. Check out Sporty Parts in Fullerton, CA they have CHROME tin cam covers. Don't change it, just put a chrome cover on it.

yes sorry I did mean cam cover, but thanks for the info I'll just polish it as someone quoted me 300 dollars to chrome plate it
