Hey all!
first time posting in here and I'm getting desperate.
My bike (98 xl883) last fall started "coughing" from the carb while pulling away (or just accelerating in general) I thought it may have not been warmed up enough but it kept doing it.
Then it started doing it while cruising at a steady speed. And mainly pulling away from stops.
I had the carb cleaned, plugs changed, air filter replaced and checked the tank for rust/dirt.
Any advice would be appreciated!
James

Reason: Info
Best way to check is take some carb cleaner while the bike is warmed up and running and spray near the intake manifold if the rpm changes then you most likley have and intake gasket leak. If you pull the carb off and look through the intake manifold you can see some of the manifold to head gasket, you can check to see if it is ripped and creating a leak. That's how I found my leak

Didn't hear any change in rpm but the carb to intake gasket is pretty soft. I ordered the kit but kinda have a feeling it may not be it. I saw someone on here talk about a VOES grounding issue?
The VOES would not make your bike do what your experiencing unless you have the vacuum hose that goes to it either disconnected or leaking. There should be a vacuum hose coming from either the intake manifold or carb, that "T's" off so one hose goes to the VOES and the other goes to the petcock. Check for disconnections or leaks in that hose. You can even disconnect the hose, plug the nipple on the carb (or manifold) and take it for a test ride. See if the bucking goes away.
Did you clean the carb or someone else?
The slow jet in the carb is very small and it don't take much to clog. Same with the idle transfer ports. Very small and you have 5 of them. If obstructed, they can be difficult to clean and often over looked. They can be cleaned, just need to verify they are clean...

I had someone clean it, I'll take a look myself though as I can't verify he cleaned the Jets properly. I did notice a vacuum hose on the back of the petcock was just barley on and without a hose clamp, but I ran the bike and pinched the line to see if it affected the idle and it didn't so I kind of ruled that out but I'm thinking I want to trace it back to see if the other side is snug. I'm assuming it's going to the VOES?
To summarize I have to get the carb out and check everything over. Also I ordered new seals for the carb/manifold/intake.
