Working on a friends 2006 Sportster 1200C. It was running fine but then he let it sit for a year and wouldn't start. Cranked fine but wouldn't start so I rebuilt the carb and put in a new battery because the old one died after sitting so long and wouldn't hold a charge . Also flushed out the old gas and put in fresh. The problem is it will not start the first time you try to start it after it's been sitting overnight. He gives it a small shot of starting fluid which I hate doing for several reasons and it will start right up and run fine. It will start every time after that even if you shut it off immediately without letting it warm up. It doesn't stall or miss, runs great and starts every time. Let it sit over night and it won't start again. Obviously I don't want to start it with starting fluid anymore or anything else.I have checked the choke cable and there is nothing wrong with it. It is ONLY on the FIRST start that it has a problem. He can literally start it with starting fluid, shut it off immediately and then it's fine the rest of the day. And yes, I told him to stop using starting fluid. I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction before I tear the carb apart again. Would that be a problem with the enricher or petcock maybe ? I've read though a zillion posts and couldn't seem to find anyone with the exact same problem. Thanks in advance.
Possibilities . . .
1 - Harley's have a vacuum operated fuel petcock. It will not open the fuel flow until there is a vacuum signal to open it. Translation - let it crank a little longer to get the fuel flowing OR change the petcock.
2 - Enrichner is stuck making it excessively lean.
3 - Prime the throttle. Give it a few twist of the wrist
Hope this helps ya. FYI, my Wife's 04 1200 Custom cranks a lot before it fires . . . after sitting a few days. Pull "choke" and small twist and starts right up.
