1990 was the last year of 4 speeds and Chain drives on Sportys, 91 they went to belts and 5 speeds.
I have broke a belt on both a Sporty and a BT, but the belts where not new and I had abused it on modified engines with wheelies, burn outs and just to much shock load dumping the clutch.
The belts are plenty strong so unless, so even being a hooligan, belts take a lot of abuse, its probably not aligned correctly especially if you have a stock HP engine.
[QUOTE=John Harper;20747132]I think belts are good for at least 50K miles. Pilot error is indicated. Make sure belt is aligned and tensioned properly.
What did the old belts look like at the breaking point? Rock damage, or any obivious issues?
What exactly do you mean by "replaced the bottom end?"

So its a long story. The just of it is bike has 66k. At 50k I installed S&S 1200 top end. This spring I finished upgrades with cams, dynatek ign, super E carb. Then the rod on front cyl started slapping. So I bought a engine and swapped bottom ends. Bout 1k the og belt broke at around 64k. Got a HD replacement and got 1k out of it. Sittin at stop light put in gear when first one snapped. Downshifting to turn of highway with second. The front pulley came with the bottom end I bought. The rear is og to bike!

You snapped two you either are seriously abusing the bike in general or there's a gross mechanical issue you've missed somewhere. On a piglet shouldn't be hard to eliminate the mechanical part of it.
The heavy happy hand option is on you.
I ride aggressively but no stunts! Im thinking it could be a pulley issue the front isnt original to bike.
You saying when the Harley was bought out from the Brunswick company in 81, none of their last years Sportster models were belt drive?
I was almost positive his tank had AMF right below Harley. But I also thought it was in the 1990es which is 10 years after the buy out.
Going to text him and ask.
Officially the date was 1982 from AMF to "public". No Ironhead had Any Belts... oh wait... aftermarket had belt primaries...
Hard to imagine the "Wizz Kids" that bought Harley produced anything the same year or 5, that AMF hadnt Engineered...
Imagine the time required, from "engineered" to production...
All the "WizzKids" accomplished in the '80's was to Drop Nova!!!!!
