Default Choosing a sporty. Didn't think it'd be this difficult.

I've decided to pick up a sporty for some very light touring, moto camping, etc. Wanna slap a 3.3g tank, and some rabbit ear bars on it, load it up, and cruise out to the desert. Now, theres some decent looking bikes/prices around me, including a couple seventy-twos(which ive always liked). I found 1 in its stock black color, so I can grab a black tank and be good to go, but at that point is it even worth having the 72? I mean, wasnt the big selling point the fancy paint, peanut tank, and larger front wheel? Or should I just grab any rubber mounted sporty in my price range?

thanks

I like the 04 and up idea. That's what I did when I wanted to get back on a sportster. I bought an 09' from my brother and mad it my own. Minis, seat, bag, etc. Find a good runner with the right look for what you want, and have fun building it. Here's the before and after of mine.

I don’t think it really matters. Most people who can wrench a little end up messing with their bikes no matter what the model. It’s 1/2 the fun of owning a Harley.

That being said, I think there are certain, specific models, like the 48, where I wish people would leave them be. IMO, a lot of people find our really quickly that they can’t live with a 2.1g tank and swap it out for a larger tank, but that 2.1g tank is a large part of what makes a 48 a 48, and is part of its charm. Once you loose that smaller tank, it isn’t a 48 any more.

Fuel range is important if you are planning more than a bar hopper. And I insist on a backrest. If it doesn't fit your needs you won't ride it.

Find a custom 1200 with a fat front tire they are not very common and come with a 4.5 gallon tank.
Either way go with the 1200 rubber mount.

I think you're on the right track with the 72. The taller, narrower front tire does fine on the street and will handle in the dirt & sand better than a smaller diameter, fatter, tire. Put a 3.3 or 4.5 gallon tank on it, some good suspension, a rack or sissy bar of some sort for your camping gear and have some fun!

I don't do any touring on my Sporty, but if I did this would be what I would start with. 1200T. Might not be the best if you plan to ride off road.
