Default Bars

I’m sorry I’m sure this question has been asked a thousand times but I’ve Searched and can’t find it, I just bought a 1999 sportster xl1200 and was wondering if I get 12” tbars if I will need to do extensions or if stock cables and wires will reach!!!! Thank you guys!!!!

Ya can't stretch the OEM clutch cable, front brake line and handlebar control harnesses 12" to reach the new bars.

I agree, 8" is the absolute maximum height without having to extend the wiring, cables and brake hose.

In my experience it depends ...

I changed the stock bars on a 2008 Custom to the bars that are on the 2014 Superlow. They look like a mini ape. I was looking for the cables to keep the same bend especially the clutch cable. Based on my measurements and availability I ended up with cables 4" longer.

It might have been possible to pull a tighter radius and it would have reached but it might also of made the clutch pull harder.

I'd get the longer lines on the 12" bars.

Thank you for your reply,

Harley-Davidson are aware that some customers will want to install higher than stock bars on their Sportster, so they make the wiring to the switchgear long enough to reach. H-D used the same wiring harness for the Iron 883 as the Iron 1200, which as you will know has mini-apes as stock fitment.

I went the other way with my Iron 883 and I installed flat drag bars to replace the stock bars which I wasn't a fan of. I had to reroute the clutch cable to lose a bit of it's length, The throttle cables are a bit long now, but I can live with that. I also installed a 900mm long black braided stainless steel brake hose to replace the stock rubber hose and bundy tubing item.

Harley Davidson is going to fit whatever yields them the most profit not what is the most convenient for their customers.
