The 1200 isn't even a challenge but the 883 can use some gearing and it isn't even that expansive to do.
Don't understand that, the 883 is perfectly happy cruising down the Interstate all day hovering around 3800-4000 rpm @ 70 mph or so. No buzzing, vibration, etc... the 883 just purrs at that speed and rpm. It is also capable of out accelerating or at least keeping up with most vehicles on the road up to a point.
The 883 isn't a superbike, but it's not the dog most seem to want to make it out to be. It WAS the UJM of the Harley Davidson world.

There's guy's that absolutely don't mind the 883 gearing but when you lower your cruising rpm you're going to get a nicer ride.
IDK...but I've owned a couple of the fastest rice rockets in production & I'd rather cruise the local streets at 45mph on my sweeeeet lil 883 than fly down the interstate at 150mph which I've stupidly done a few times and there's just (0) fun in that IMO. The thing IMO w/ the 883/1200 is the caveman simplicity.

That's your opinion, which is fine. The 883, at least mine is is just fine for the speeds I ride at which is in the 60-75 mph range. No vibration to speak of, motor's happy at those rpms, don't know what or how it could get any "nicer'. My idea of motorcycle riding isn't floating down the road like I was sitting in a LazyBoy recliner. I prefer a little 'rawness' in my motorcycle, and the 883 Sportster has that in spades. That rawness is why I quit buying Japanese motorcycles. They are just too refined and become boring to me.

Pretty much my story, although I never quite made it to 150 mph. Max I ever did was around 140 mph on the CBX, and yes I agree it was stupid but I was MUCH younger. Like me, you appear to have matured and moved past the gotta have the biggest, the baddest, and the fastest. Personally I could not care any less if someone's 50cc scooter were to fly past me, the 883 fills the need, and is perfect for me.

Absolutely impossible for me to agree more w/ this ^ ! The Sportster is the perfect blend of HD raw simplicity w/ out the overkill (literally & figuratively) of the street couches like the BT's. I admit I like the looks of the standard Softtail but all it took was (1) test ride around the block for me to go running back to the agile 883. Felt like riding a school bus.
Nothing comes close to cruising a v-twin, not a HD v-twin. A helluva lotta others must agree or HD would be THE best known bike in existence.
I just went back & re-read my previous post & IDK what the heck happened but that is NOT what I intended to say. I meant NOTHING COME CLOSE TO CRUISING A HD VTWIN & IS the best known bike in existence.
