@5'3" you should be able to use forwards on an 883 with no issues.
But leave the mids.
I have a 2008 here and the brake rod from the forward control hits the mid control mounting bracket. I had a spacer made to move the bracket out around 1".
Sporty forwards are not near as far forward as Dyna's so I don't think they would be a problem. And yes, I've owned both.
Let me rephrase my earlier response. I have owned Sportys and Dynas as well. Reaching the forwards on a Sporty probably won't be the issue.
The issue might be comfort if she needs to stretch to reach them or even if her feet just reach the controls, it gets uncomfortable with your legs straight out in front of you, knees straight and locked.
OP- If forwards are definitely what you want, I would try to keep the mid pegs in place if possible, to give you an option to move your feet/legs back and forth when you want to.
I'd stick with mid controls. Being able to rise on the pegs rather than planted on your *** has definite advantages. You might end up getting launched off the seat if you hit a deep pothole, especially if you are a smaller person, with forwards, you could even lose control. Short rear shocks makes the problem even worse. Additionally, low speed maneuvering is easier with mids.

I run mid controls with highway pegs in the forward control position on my Dyna. IMO it's the best of both worlds, mid controls for riding and forward pegs for stretching out on long hauls.

I agree, that's what I had on my Ironhead but never could find proper ones for my rubber mount 05'.
And on my Wideglide I actually added mid pegs for that reason. Until I put FXD footboards on it.

I would go along with that. I had to stand up the other day as I saw I couldn't avoid some rough road.
