Default oil leak

well, took the bike to the harley shop. its leaking from a brass plug installed at the factory in a drainage hole. to get this fixed they tell me the engine has to be removed , the case drilled and tapped, and a threaded oil plug inserted. Cost will be 500 to 800 bucks. anyone know how deep to drill ? and is there an oil port right under this brass plug? Considering trying this repair myself..

Could you try a bit of JB weld first, sure would be a lot easier.

No I think JB weld is an option here.
Or perrhaps an over sized fitting that will tap it's own threads into the case (use vasoline to collect the shavings)

No, no kidding. It's a plug, it never gets removed. I have had great luck with JB weld in the past and I sure would try that before removing the engine, drilling out the plug and possibly getting shavings into an oil passage, taping the hole and screwing in a plug that will never get removed anyway.
If the area is cleaned well, possibly a light sand to give a tooth and fill it with JB, problem solved for ten bucks.
Worst case senario is it doesn't work, you gotta drill it out anyway so what's to loose.
Sometimes I think HD owners are too **** to do the sensible thing, if it was a tractor orwell pumpyou would do it in a minute, I grew up on a farm and you fix things like that all the time yourself, there is no way your going to take it to a dealer to get it fixed.

JB weld works great on many applications, remember one thing, you only use it when it comes to no choice. Why not?

I agree except for the "no choice" part, I would word it as "only use it when it comes down to the really expensive choice."

Yeah, I used JB weld to plug my big sucker breather holes, run an external crankcase breather and fix the blow-by problem. See picture , I can't find a better way to plug the holes, JB rocks!

Find another shop and a creative mechanic that has a right angel drill that can helicoil it. But what I would do is teflon tape it together with high temp pipe dope or silicon high temp gasket maker, or yamaha case gasket comlb, and reinstall if I could acess it. Is it accessible?
