I do a fair amount of racing. I have a ZRX drag bike that I race for points and I also take my Hammer to our local track a few times each year. Lots of fun and don't listen to what anyone says about it hurting your bike. These bikes we ride are practically indestructable, it takes an idiot to break a bike engine.
I was at the track with a buddy on a 1200 sporty, he ran mid 13's. Thats a good time. My Hammer turned a 13.08 bone stock with a 275 lb rider. With the stage 1 exhaust it turned a 12.7 and with the S&S airbox it runs low to mid12's. My best time is a 12.26 @ 106 mph. My buddy has a Hammer equipped the same, he puts the 1/4 down in under 11.9 seconds, but he weighs 200#. You will gain a 1/10 of a sec for every 20# you take off the bike/rider weight.
It doesn't matter if its a HD, Victory or whatever else. They can all be fast if your willing to put the money into to go fast.A Victory 100" will break into the 12's pretty much bone stock with a avg weight rider riding it, say around 200-225. You can add a stage 1 exhaust and S&S airbox for $600-$700 and that will give you 96 hp and over 100 tq.
I just added a 2-1 exhaust on my bike and am getting around 106/108 tq/hp. I'm hoping that will get me in the 11's.
My Dad, Brother, and I used to spend the weekend at the strip when I was in High School. We each had a car we'd run (Dad - 68 396 Camaro, Brother - 70 396 Chevelle, Me - 77 Camaro w/350, 4 bolt main, bored 30 over, nitrous-oxide, etc).
We were very happy with getting into the 12's. Now all of these "cruisers" that are considered "slow" by motorcycle standards are running similar times. Pretty cool. I'd kinda wondered what a Sportster would run - I knew it felt pretty quick, but I'll probably never get around to taking to the track or anything.
I've never ridden any of the 10 second (or less) bikes out there. I can't imagine what that'd be like.
Dragging is a blast. Ran my Evo chopper a dozen times on the local 1/8 mi track. It is harder on the bike than street riding, but worth if for the adrenaline rush. Decided to hold 3rd gear thru the traps and went a little over redline(no tach). Didn't notice anything bad til I pulled the front rocker cover and pulled half of the front pushrod out. It had broken but just compressed on itself, ran fine. It takes some serious technical stuff to race regularly and you will break things occaisonally.
Sounds pretty cool to me. Why is it considered "beating" your bike by making a few passes down the strip? I think lack of maintaining your bike (or whatever) is more detrimental to it then doing some passes at the track.
For the transmission you will kill the transmission sooner by babying it than beating the **** out of it. Take a sportster and beat the hell out of the transmission. It will hold up. Take a sportster, double or triple the power output, then beat the hell out of the transmission. It will hold up. Lug the engine (the sportster does not have a cush drive) and you are most likely to break the transmission.
Just to add: this applies to the 5 spd straight cut gear transmission.

They aren't near as radical as you would think. Its nothing like riding in a 10 second car, a car feels twice as violent.
A bike like a Busa or your liter bikes pull hard but they get their ET's through their light weight anda constant pull from the time they launch until they near redline. My ZRX will reach 100+ mph in 2nd gear and a Busa redlines 4th at 165 mph, in comparison my bike tops out at 165 in 5th (Thats airlimited, not rpm.) yet the Busa still has 2 more gears to go. On my Hammerlike other V-Twins 1st is only good for 50mph and 2nd for 70 mph. My top speedon my Hammer is 137mph (GPS).
Also don't take short shifting to the extreme, it will definitely help a bike that has not been opended up both intake and exhaust, but if your bike is breathing well use those rpm's to get the hp. Once off the line its all about peak hp numbers and keeping the bikes rpm in the peak range. You may need to short shift a little but not much. I seen guys try

Just wondering if anyone else has tried to race one of these. Fellow riders in the area seemed quite impressed with this time. Would love to hear from others.
If that's your goal - drag racing, I mean - go drop $4k on a '99-'04 R-1 and do 9.5s all day long. You're taking a spoon to a gun fight.

Better yet.... Buy a 4 time National Champion V-Rod drag bike.... If you really want to go fast.... I don't think being the fastest bike on the strip was his goal.... And I'd rather drag on a Sporty than a Yamaharley any day.... Don't give a f!@k if it's slower

But doing on the street was even more so.... yeah... yeah... I know, don't bother telling me...
If it's your thing... then do it.... Don't recall ever breaking anything doing it... but then again, back in those days I didn't keep a car very long... [8D]
