Hi there,
being new to caring for a porous aluminum engine case, I must have done something wrong.
As I washed the bike, I used "supertech degreaser" to remove some greasy deposits around the head bolts.
Now, it is either the degreaser or just water staying on the fins for too long, but I created some bad black stains on the gray aluminum finsih.
I tried to remove them using Mr Clean Magic Eraser, it seemed to be working at first. Then I realized they were not really going completely away. In three spots I applied more rubbing and the stains were removed...but together with the finish coat. Now I have a couple of spots with very bright aluminum exposed. I read somewhere that these areas are prone to oxidation.
Is there anything I can do to protect these parts? a sort of touch up paint for the gray porous aluminum finish of the case?
Any suggestions on how to remove the remaining stains on the fins?
these motors are powercoated. useing anything that will harm paint can effect them. you might get by with some clearcoat, how long that will work is anybody's guess.
Show some pics. Anything you spray on the engine better be high heat and made for that application. Clear coat that is. On another note. Why do people use solvents on their bikes if they aren't sure if it is okay? Soapy water will do the trick. Anything else, ask.lol!!
I thought newbie stains were when the bike is new, excitement! Then listening to that 45 degree single crankpin sound...more excitement...then staring into it's seductive headlights...much excitement...then in all the excitement.... Oh, never mind!
A do it yourself car wash works pretty well for me. High pressure soap and water does wonders for grease and grit. Just be careful not to drown the electricals. What you don't get off at the car wash, detail with some good all purpose bike cleaner...Honda Spray Cleaner and Polish works great! But they don't make it anymore...IMHO, chemicals should be applied with a relatively cool engine, and not left on too long.
I have a small rocker box leak...On my plain grey aluminum cylinders I just spray brake cleaner on the spots I want to clean...Works perfect. You do want to make sure you do not get this on the paint though.....
