You can change the cam and get an engine that has a more potato potato sound. But you might first just try to slow the idle speed. That's easy and quick. If the carb has never been adjusted, it's quite possible the idle speed was set too high at the factory. I know my 06 883 idle speed was WAY too high from the factory.

If you can get one of those meters that clip to the plug wires, adjust the idle speed to around 900-950. At least I think the idle speed for the 1200 is suppose to be the same as the 883.

I read that if you lower the idle speed from where its suppose to be, the oil will not be circulated thru the engine at idle.

I think that the FI bikes ide too fast to get the potato potato idle ,as I pulled up along a older H/D the other day and it definately had the classic Harley idle.

A cam change will give you the sound. But hold onto your checkbook, the sportsters use 4 cams and the engine cases need to be split to get to them. This is not a cheap upgrade by any means, you can adjust your idle speed by turning the idle screw down. Just don't go to far or you could underlubricate/overheat your engine. Idle speed for a 06 1200 is 900 rpm, the idle screw, as you look at your air cleaner is, behind the air cleaner,on top of the carb to the right, small phillips head screw, counterclockwise decreases idle speed. You can get to it without removing anything if you have a long screwdriver.

I also like a low idle RPM but be careful about dropping it below about 950. If you get much lower you will loose oil pressure and that can get expensive.

Split the cases to change the cams? Huh? [&:]
How about pulling off the cam cover?

I friend of mine is wanting to put the 1250 kit in his 883. And since he isn't much of a wrench is hitting me up to do the work for him. So after going through the directions and such to see if it is feasable in my garage and with my equipment, I was thinking one thing and typing something else. I am not one of the guys to post stuff just to seem like I know what I am doing. If I don't know I stay out of it, so mistakes like that tork me off. I don't give advice unless I am sure, this was just a case of too much similar info interconnecting in my little brain and coming out onto the keyboard jarbled. Sorry for the blunder.
