Default Please Help AGAIN!!

I have just changed the handlebars on my 1991 Sporty, using all the original switch gear etc. Now the problem I have is that the thing WILL NOT start, there is a strong spark at the plug and power from the kill switch and to the coil, I have removed the headlamp to see if the controls that I got with the new bars would fit, having seeing that they wouldn't fit I decided to use the exsisting ones, so I have checked to see if I have disturbed any wires in there, it would appear that I havn't.
The bike was running fine up until I changed the bars!!!!!????[:@]
Please HELP![&:]
Kindest Regards
Jonathan

sounds like a loose wire or one missed connection mabey even a pinched wire causing a grounding out situation - double check the fuses - I suspect kill switch but you said you have power through there - what about the back of the ignition? - if that were it there wouldn't be power at the kill switch. Did I mention elect. problems tend to make me drink heavily? They are more frustrating than a middle school student in desperate need of an attitude adjustment. Yeap I'm sure youve done it but 1 more time for turds and giggles. Volt meter in hand, start from the begining (yes you mentioned you have spark, bear with me).
You must drink a minimum of 1 beer at each step!
Battery has jucie - check
power at ignition - check
kill switch is functioning properly - power in on position no power in off - check (buuuurp)
all wires from point A (begining) to point B (end) or to their next conection point are connected and have power - check

if no loose - pinched - bad connections or blown fuses are found continue drinking beer while thinking it over.

(yes since I am a friend who feels for you, I too will drink along for moral support)[sm=icon_guiness.gif]

ELEC. PROBLEMS REALLY DO HONESTLY CREATE A VERY STRONG VACCUME (suck)

If you have a strong spark at the plugs sounds like fuel delivery problem, or maybe flooded it while messing with throttle changing the bars.

England (Initially though that was your last name) - wow, this means to drink with you @ 7:30. I'm going to have to start @ 3:30 (still in school as I cover detention duties on Thur.) - earliest I could "join you" in moral support, would be 9:30 you time, remember to note that time and we'll toast accross the big pond together[sm=icon_cheers.gif]

As far as the bike situation:
It will fire occasionally, but only once every so often and thats with no choke, and with the fuel off.
Fuel off? - why this is strange, almost makes it sound more like a carberation issue brought on by the tinkering process. It is possible that crud built up the system worked loose and it just so happened to do it now. There seams to be a stuck needle. I'll look over the DIY sections and try finding something to help, if your up to it, on small engines, (lawn mower, gererators and such) I could conferm my suspitions by squirting a small amount of fuel into each cylinder, (1 litter soda botle cap full) then reinstalling the plugs and then cranking it over. If it burped and then quit - I would repeat up to three times. Many times, this allowed the crud to work loose and could clear the imediate blockage. Carbs would still need to be cleaned.

Repars on carberators are at least straight foward with a manuel and lotsa pictures.

Hang in there

I'm getting a big bucket of popcorn to see how this movie turns out. hehe
Sorry, I really do feel your pain.. This problem would mean the consumption of a full 12 pack of my favorite cold beverage to keep my sanity... But, here's my 2 cents, maybe it helps, maybe not...

Why would you have carb issues just after messing with hand controls? The only think I can see that would cause a fuel problem from a handlebar swap is possibly the throttle cables? But if you have any kind of idle jet going, it should at least try to pop a few times to start even with throttle cable issues.. maybe?

Doesn't indicate it's electrical with all that spark too so this one is tough.. maybe something going on with the ignition unit?

I was thinking,
It is possible that crud built up the system worked loose and it just so happened to do it now
and since it is:
on my 1991 Sporty
I don't know for certain but in 14+ yrs, it could happen - things tend to get josseled around - try this[sm=headbang.gif]

If you changed the bars you had the throttle cables off the old ones and back on the new ones, so take a minute to revisit the cables. Does the throttle "twist" like it did prior? Does it return to idle position just as before? I think this is where your problem HAS to be. When I changed my bars the throttle would not return to idle position. I had to "adjust" the clamping to get it right.
