Default what do you think?

Last winter I bought my first harley. Its the 2003 sporter, gun metal pearl,883
I want a bit more power so I've been thinking about turning it into the 1200. I guess my question is since its a 100th anniversary should I do it or just leave it as is? Not sure what it any value it may have in the future. I love the ride and very easy to handle its just that you go through the gears quickly and run out of engine quick.
Let me know your opinions, thanks

I say go for it, but don't stop at 1200. You can go 1250 before you have to bore your cases, and still be able to return to stock 883 if want to.

We've owned an 883R and a 1200R at the same time. Now we just own the 1200R. Nonetheless, the 1200 isn't that big a difference. It would help with your shifting a little bit. For instance, most shift points on the 1200 are 5-10mph after the 883's shift points. So, less shifting. Also, when rolling in the higher gears, the 1200 can do 60mph in 4th with the SAME rpms that the 883 does 60 with in 5th. So, as you can see, the faster you go, the more difference it makes. I suppose because it's a "collectors" I wouldn't modify it. Not to mention I quite frankly think the 1200 conversion can cause problems with the engine if some shmuck does it. Basically, the 1200 is better at passing and hills than that 883, but it's not to the point where I would do the conversion. The 883 is better at 25mph in town, too, because the 1200 is pretty much luggin at anything less than 30.

If the mod were to be done it would be by a reputable Harley dealer. I'd just hate to take a anniversary year and make a major change to it and not be able to go back. Most of my driving is around town and once in a while to Lake George thats about 40 miles away. Its when I'm on the highway that I really notice I run out of gear and engine. But if the 1200 really isn't going to be that much different then it won't be worth it. The bike has already depreciated almost a grand since spring. If I keep it orginal then hopefully at some point it would be worth a bit more. Hell the bike doesn't even have 5000 miles yet on it. I will say its comfortable to ride... when I bought it the dealership recommend the sundowner seat... thank god!
So far most agree just to leave it alone.

if you change it from an 883 to a 1200 you still have the same trans. dont see how that changes shift points, same rpm and same mph you just get there quicker. at least thats how i see it.

Okay, basically, the 1200 is the same through 60mph. But, since at 60mph it is literally running 1 gear less than the 883, it has a tendency to be MUCH better for highway trips. It will comfortably glide along with virtually no vibrations at 80mph and 90mph in its last gear. The 883 has this same feeling at 60mph and 70mph because it is already in its last gear then. So if you prefer to travel at a slow, slow speed of 60/70 stay 883. If you prefer to actually be able to keep up with the car traffic get the 1200 conversion because knowing you have enough power at 80mph is a much better feeling than the 883. The 883 is like a wind-up toy on the highway -- you gotta hold full throttle to pass anyone.

For the record, the 883 will do about90mph at 5000 rpms on the tach in 5th gear.
The 1200 will do 100mph at 4800 rpms in 5th gear.

So, as you can see, the 1200 is much better for highway cruising. But like you said, if you're mainly in town, the 1200 will have a tough time with that because anything less than 30mph puts you into 1st gear at about 3200, which is about screamin first or luggin 2nd. 1200 is bad for in town in my opinion.

Oh crap, you're right. The 883 conversion kit I guess doesn't make it a "true" 1200 then. Damn...

What your saying certainly make sense to me...
Guess you can't just change the shift points!! Well this is giving me a lot to think about if I "really" want to convert. By the time I spend the money I could just sell and buy a 1200.
