Note that my advice on popping a link was only if the DPO had installed a chain that was a link too long to start with. I don't recommend popping a link out of a worn out chain. However, you gotta do what you gotta do. And if you're going to Aggie rig it, then take it real easy, keep plenty of lube on it and get the right stuff to fix it ASAP. Besides, you're not riding it without the air filter anyway, right?
The last Diamond chain I bought was about $29, but that's been a while. The shop I frequented back then bought 530 chain in bulk on a large spool and just cut off what you needed.
I adjusted the old chain. pulled the adjusters forward and it tightened up. what is the minimum tension to have on it? when it was loose it was moving 60mm, now its got around 15mm of free play. i heard between 35-40 was normal for some motorcycles, but i dont know about my harley. should i loosen? what problems arise from a too tight chain.
in a month or so im going to replace all the sprockets and chain anyways. i just want a temp solution to my problem at the moment.
A new chain and sprockets doesn't have to bust the bank. I recently put a Western Powersports nickel chain on my Sporty. It was about 30 bucks. New sprockets weren't much more.
I wouldn't ride around much on a very badly worn chain. If it breaks and wads up under the front sprocket cover, it can bust your engine cases.
