Default first accident

[:@]Well I had my first accident on a bike. I was cruising down the highway on my way to work when a box truck decided he needed to stop in the middle of the road for no reason. I have taken the BRC and all of the training kicked in. I avoided serious injury to myself but my bike didn't fare so well. I ended up hitting the step on the back of the truck with the right fork about where the reflector first. Then it ripped off my exhaust in the front jug and also damaged the fins. Then it took out my intake and then the rear exhaust and cracked the fins on the rear jug.

I have a contusion on my leg and jammed my wrist on my right arm. I am now waiting for the insurance company to come out and appraise the bike.

I have had my bike for about 3 months. It is an 07 cobalt blue XL1200C.

I am now worried about my odds with my insurance company dropping me all together. Due to the fact that I have not had my bike that long and having an accident.

I am thinking there is about $5000 in damage by the time the parts and labor are figured in. Does anyone have any better idea of what the damages are? Or any words of wisdom.

Thanks for listening.

Glad it wasn't any worse than it was.

Insurance problems will depend on who the company is, where you're located, etc. Probably a real good bet your premiums are going to go up. Some companies can and will cancel others won't. I think that generally these days they don't cancel your coverage, just raise the rates.

Just glad you are ok!

I wrecked mine 2 months ago and just got it back. The insurance thing was a nightmare, but it finally got worked out thanks to the tech at the Harley shop. I can't assess your damage, but to give you an idea. I hit a mailbox at about 30mph on the front right fork, damaged fork (not bent), broke forward control, destroy front jug exhaust (not damage to jug), destroyed fender, scratched tank, trashed windshield, both levers, bent bars, mirrors, scratch the primary covers, headlight assembly etc. The first estimate totaled the bike at $6500 in damages. They valued my bike at $8500 and damages can't exceed a certain percentage of its value. I had a loop hole because of an insurance screw up and got to keep my bike. When re-estimated as "repairable" damages were figured at $5800 which didn't exceed the value. Insurance company didnt' drop me and I wont' know the increase til next year. Sorry to say, but you are probably in for a long ride.

Glad to hear you made it out ok. Sorry about the scoot getting messed up. Good luck with the insurance, don't think they will drop you, just raise your rates.
Were there any whitness that would at least go to court with you? Might be your best bet. Most of those box truck drivers, drive like they are the only ones on the road anyway.

The most important thing, is YOU were able to walk (or at least, HOBBLE) away.

Bikes can bereplaced. The riders cannot.

Good luck!!
