Hi everybody, when i bought my bike, like a month ago (92 XLH 1200) the battery was dead so i decide i didnt want to have any problem with my first Harley, right ?? So the local dealer ( this is in Mexico ) didnt have the battery and they said " we can order the part but i can take up to 2 months to get it and is about 150 usd ..."
Of course there was no way i was going to wait that much time without riding my first Harley, i guess all of you understand that, so i went to a BatteryMaster dealer and after a while i found one with the exact same dimensions, the onlydifference is that this battery has a breather tube, so i have been using the bike and i noticed after every ride it leaks a little bit of acid thru the breather hole, so what do you recomend, if i just put a plug on the battery i am afraid it is going to explode at some point or do you think it will be o.k. ??
Sounds like you got the right physical size battery, but I'm wondering what the actual AMP rating is. Sounds like it is under-sized electrically and the alternator is pumping back more juice than it can hold - or you've got a voltage regulator that needs a look at the output compared to spec. DO NOT "plug" the battery! That could definitely be an explosion waiting to happen when a battery needs to vent.
Don't plug the vent, it needs it. The only thing you really do with it is put a long enough vent tube to route underneath the bike. They either overfilled the battery at the store, or didn't let it gas off properly when the acid was poured in, a vented battery shouldn't spill under normal riding conditions. Although, i'd recomend simply getting a sealed battery, I can't beleive they wanted $150 for one, My last battery I got was an interstated brand battery for $35 which are known for reliability and long lasting.
Thank you guysfor the advice, $ 150 usd for an original HDbattery, isnt thatridiculous ?? these bastards...i check the price of forward controls and they want $ 480 usd for them, those are just 2 examples ofhow my local STEALER want to do busness with us, i am going to check the charging system and yes, i tought about using some kind of vent hose all the way to the ground, i guess that is a lot better than have acid on my polished covers, they look really nasty and is a pain to clean them.
I apreciate your help...
