Default 883 Conversion Questions

I have looked around the forums and found one post where someone got the conversion done from a dealer around $1400 but then had to buy a few extra things like a new ignition module. So my question is anyone have any ball park figures as to how much it would cost to do an 883 conversion completely including any other parts needed like the ignition etc 1) from the dealer, 2) doing it myself? Just looking for ball park figures here really.

I ask because being a new rider I am seriously considering getting the 883, but I know that once I get used to to and feel comfortable with I will want the 1200. But since I will be buying used and on a Navy budget it is looking like the 883 are the ones that will be with-in my price range for now, then I could save up for a conversion if it isn't outrageous.

Anyways thank you all in advance for any help you can offer.

883 is bigger than you think. just get it and dont worry about upgrading for a few months. you might even feel you dont have to.

but DO go stage 1.

anyways my '88 883 is all stock and has insane acceleration and power.

Thanks for the tip, but I do keep hearing the the 883 is a tad sluggish when riding 2up, and since the wife will be wanting rides (after I get comfortable) I was looking down the road a bit. But I am more and more leaning towards starting off with 883.

I do some 2 up with my 883 and it's fine. How fast do you want to go with a passenger?? I won't say somewhere down the road I won't get a conversion done, but the 883 is NOT lacking in power.

I was told, due to the difference in gearing, a converted 883 is faster than a stock 1200.

Don't bother putting on pipes and an air cleaner on the 883. Even if you did, it's still only considered "stage half" not stage 1. The 883 is a great bike, don't get me wrong, but I just don't think you'd see the performance jump like you would with a 1200.

We just got rid of an orange 2007 883R a little while ago, and it was a decent bike 1-up. We didn't try 2-up, but we did try 2-up on the 1200. You're going to find you can do it, but it's going to be a little tight front to back. Oh, and you'll probably need to replace the rear shocks if you do 2-up on any Sportster because the stock ones will bottom out on some bumps.

No. The gearing on the 1200 would leave the 883 behind. The 883 converted is faster in each of its gears, but each of its gears leaves the bike going about 10mph less than the 1200 on average. For instance, the 883 runs 70mph at 4,000 rpms in 5th gear while the 1200 runs 70mph at 4,000 rpms in 4th gear.

So it would be faster getting to the next gear than the 1200 maybe, but it would need to shift at much lower speeds on the speedometer.

well get it and try it out. I ride two up once in awhile and its fine. starting off takes just half a second longer becuase it is pulling maybe twice the weight, but you wont know until you get it.
