It's a fact that the only thing faster than a Sportster in the HD line-up is the VRSC. That is, if you're talking about stock vs. stock bikes for the whole HD line-up AND if you had the same exact rider skills on all the bikes.
EDIT: I should say, the only thing faster than a Sportster up to 5th gear is the VRSC. After that, any big twin will take the Sportster out.
Technically speaking, if you're doing twisties, the Sportster should be faster than your friend's VRSC because he has a longer wheelbase which makes him a slower turner. It's all mainly dependent on rider skills, however.
For instance, my dad can beat me through anywhere on his Electra Glide Classic when I'm on my Sportster because he's got tons more experience than I do.

It all boils down to rider skill in the end.
When riding with my V-Rod friend I will close the distance slightly in tight curves, however any straight section in the road allows him to increase the distance exponentially. Basically, I would never catch him under any circumstance unless he's in a ditch.
they are fast, but any modified BTwill easily keep up or beat us, i raced a 87' fxr 1340 and he beat me after 1st gear and i gave up at 105 he was way ahead . i have over 25 years riding exper. But still i love my sporty!!
In the world of motorcycles, Sporties aren't that quick.
xxxflhrci said it best. A Sportster's speed and it's comparison to other bikesis best kept simply between it and other Harleys. In the early-mid-1960's I had a 6-speed Suzuki X-6 Hustler 2-stroke twin that could kick anything's a$$ on the road up to 80+ mph - including the 1000cc Ariel Square Four (the fastest production bike since 1952 in the 1/4-mile until the Honda Four). Harley's ain't slow, but like xxxflhrci said, "In the world of motorcycles, Sporties aren't that quick."

Oh, yeah, of course any straightaways and he's going to pull away from you. I mean if you were strictly doing twisties only, you would have a pretty good chance at beating him. It would have to have no real straight parts, though.
I got beat off the line by a speed-triple because of a mis-shift.[:@] Other then that I haven't lost yet, unless they were passing cars illeagly; double yellow or same lane. Once I hit triple digits I let off throttle,I know plenty of bikes have a higher top end and I don't need to get my bike impounded. I am willing to take some risks but I'm not going to risk my bike.
My bike isn't as fast as my Dad's Fatboy. He weighs about 40lbs more than me but his bike is also pushing just over 100hp. I'm not in it for the speed, so my bike suits me well.
