Default '89 turn lights don't stay on...

O.K. this may sound like a dumb question but on this '89 xlh the turn signals don't stay on unless you hold the switch ( for either side). Looking at the factory wiring diagram I don't see any light module or anything else, except for the switches bulbs and flasher. What the heck controlls the hold so you can let go of the button when turning. Do i have bad switches on both sides??? Please help!!!

My 1988 does the same thing. When I took it apart I found that the switches had been modified to be momentary and not latching. This is how the old Sportsters used to be. I bet your switches were modified too.

i also have an '88

this is just how the bikes are. besides, at least it was designed in a comfortable position so you dont have to strain your hand to use the signals.

if it was designed to stay on it would be a single throw switch on the left handlebar, not a seperate button that sits where your thumb rests.

i agree though, it is a little annoying. there are aftermarket mods. or just internal mods to the switch. go nuts!

paying attention to its position and design explains the way it works.
