Default Tach help, please

I have a 2008 XL883 Low. I found a tach for $120. It is part number 67182-95D. Says it fits XL models 1999-2003. Well, I am having a bitch of a time trying to wire it up.
I guess I need to know if this will even work on an 08 model. If so, I need to know where to splice it in to the wiring harness.

There were many many changes between 2003 & 2004. Not many of the parts are interchangeable, but some of the electrical and mechanical gurus here may be able to help ya.

I can't offer any help, but you aren't the only one. I just got a tach installed by the dealer. they quoted me one hour. It took them 6. It was a model of HD tach they weren't familiar with, and it had its own power cable. They had to eat the extra 5 hours of labor. [/align]

You need a Single-Fire to Dual-fire Tach Adapter.

Well, Hi There Justin. Good to see you on the forum.

Yep, scottburns8ball. That '03 tach won't just plug into an '04-later. What Justin says is your solution.

Lessee, if I understand this right, you have a single fire bike, that is, two coils (CoP, basically) with one spark per 4 strokesand the tach is set up for a waste spark (one coil)/two sparks per 4 strokes, right? So, if you hook it up just loose to test it, the tach should read 1/2 what the motor is doing. You could wire some diodes up to feed your tach from both your coils.Or, if you add a frequency doubler circuit, that should fix your tach reading also.So yeah, if they sell such a gizmo and you don't have to make it your self, that's the easy way to go. There are some drawings on www.msefi.com at least for the diodes. Search for tach or tachometer or tach adapter and waste spark or CoP or coil on plug.

I have everything hooked up.Everyhting seems okay exceptthat thetach is fluctuating with some sort of current in the line instead of with the engine. Is that what the adapter is for? If so, Then I will order one, but on the website, it does not show them for sale seperately.Who do I get in contact with to buy one?
Thanks.

This doesnt sound correct. If you hooked this up it should read 1/2 the RPM. The adapter adds the pulses from each cylinder into a signal which looks like the dual fire. I was not suggesting you buy the tachAdapter I sell. Infact I don't know for certain if it would work with this tach. That is one of the reasons I sell it only with a microTach. Unless you get it reading 1/2 RPM any adapter won't work for you. Let me know how you hooked it up and I may be able to help.

you can send email to info@speedwayinstruments for information about buying one without a microTach.

Good Luck,

Justin

I had the power and ground wires done correctly. For the signal input, I used the LGN/V data wire that also feeds the speedo. According to the wiring diagram for the 08 models, that wire shares info with the speedo and tach. I think the problem I have is that this older model tach does not understand the info it is getting. So, I think I need to wire it directly to the coil. Would that be correct? And since I have 2 ignition coils, that means I have dual fire, right?
Sorry to seem so stupid, but I am trying to learn. Thanks for the help.

You are correct. The signal to the speedo is a serial digital signal much like the USB or RS232 on your computer. The tach you have can only count pulses. I expect when you get it hooked upto the coil signals that you will get a reading of 1/2 correct RPM.

Correction: You have a Single-Fire ignition. Each cylinder fires only 1 per 2 revolutions. Where as the dual-fire fires both cylinders 1 per 1 revolution.
