Default Drivability

I just got my first Sportster, an 08 1200 low with SE A/C and SE street performance mufflers. I've done about 600 miles and mpg is improving. I was wondering what to expect for drivability. In 5th with very judicious use of the throttle I can go down to about 2000 ish rpm, 42 mph, but it only gets really responsive around 2500 rpm. In town, it doesn't hunt, but it's a bit touchy in 2nd gear in that 2000 to 2500 rev range. I think it's getting smoother with more miles. I am using premium gas.

What's your experience with EFI stage 1's?

Have a great holiday. Looks like the sun's going to shine in the Philly area.

I forgot - it does have the download. No problems with popping but it does feel a bit lean to me. I'd be interested in thoughts on whether to go the SERT route. I'm getting about 43mpg on a mix of twisty back-roads and urban stuff.

Welcome to the forum Simon. I have Stage 1 on my 07 and get about 50mpg. It sounds like you are lugging it if you mean 42mph in 5th, not sure what you mean.

2000 rpms or 42 mph in 5th gear is lugging the engine! I wouldn't even think of using 5th until at least 55 mph

That's what I find, but some people seem to describe their Sportsters as pulling down to those kind of revs. 5th gear works for me from about 55 or so. Sounds like it's normal.

Thanks

Congratulations on your bike and welcome from Tucson.

My 05 is carbed but I find I can go into 5th at 50. Anything less than 50 and I'll be geared down. For my bike and for laid bike riding my shift ponts are into 2nd at 20, 3rd at 30 , 4th at 40 and 5th at 50. (pretty simple formula for me to remember) Of course these are all based on the fact the road is level. Upor down hill would make a difference.

Lately, with the SE A/C and V&H Short Shots and Fuel Pak...I have no Tach. I'm not hitting fourth until I'm moving over 60. I am racing the engine a little, but I'm just riding it like it's telling me.If I really get on it I'm hitting 70 in third. I have an '07 Nightster.

I'm only getting 39 mpg...On city streets...What do i need to do to get that thing up to 50 mpg? Maybe i need to take it a little easier, But it then feels like I'm riding it her like she wants.

Well speed costs $$. even at the gas pump. If you are riding it like you stole it and still getting 39mpg then you aren't doing too bad.

I have to concur as I can't get it to 5th gear unless I'm doing at least 60. Anything less ans the engine is lugging.

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like my bike it where it should be in terms of drivability. I have to say that taking a bend at 70 in 3rd is more fun than 50 mph in 5th gear. Perhaps that's why I only get 43 mpg.
