Just for everybody's info, I called Biggs in San Marcos, for aprice on the starter motor, only $375! Thought it would be a good idea to pick up two, why not?
They have other manf's also and a lot less than the HD price you mentioned. If you feel that you can do the swap yourself you could get a better starter at a lower price. The black starter is even cheaper ($170 vs. $240 for chrome).
One question about the starters, whats the differencebetween a stock starter and these 1.4 kw starters I see so much. Is it a high torque starter? Thanks for the link mrb302,hell of a lot cheaper. But yeah SoCal, can't beat the weather for riding. A little rain here and there never hurt anybody.
Alright, just came back from outside. I looked over everything I could see, and it looked good. I checked every ground I could find/see, and nothing was loose. Checked all the wires, and couldn't find any broken/chaffed wires. I used to be an auto mechanic, and everything that I'm finding is pointing towards a bad starter. The "click of doom" I was talking about, was the starter, not the dead battery click. I'm all out of ideas with this one guys. Only bad thing is that the good ol' Marine Corps doesn't make me a millioinare so if somebody could give me a ball park figure on the starters price, I'd appreciate it. I'm guessing around $200, $250, hopefully I'm right.
I am having same problem with my Sporty but never thought it could be the starter. I am not positive of the difference between a bad battery click and a starter click. Can you tell me? I'm to the point of taking to my Harley guy to fix. Very, very frustrating.
