Most people refer to the 1200 as being the onlyTRUE Harley Sportster and have nicknamed the 883 as a "Sportser Lite", HD Vibrator for the girls, the Harley 883 ****-TicK, HD BOOB-Bouncer.... and the insults go on.. Still it's a great bike with plenty of power for general riding pleasure by both sexes..

You know that's BS in itself, the ONLY place I have ever heard that is on a internet forum. What kind of bike do you have? I also have never heard that "True Sportster" remark ever except here & now from you? How can the 1200 be the only true Sportster?I present the original Sportster

I have had a 89' 883H & I have a 06' 883C,I didn't really notice any difference in Vib's between my two bikes, maybe my 89' was set up right, that bike flew and criused 90 anytime you wanted,it was up there with 36k on th ODO. Anyway consider what your plans are first for mods. I wish I would have kept the 89' now because so far I can't find anyone or anything to get a Springer front end on my rubber mount which pisses me off unless I want to drop enuff into it to get done to the price tune of being able to buy another 89' Sporty like I had for the cost of just a front end[:@]

Give me a good old fashioned solid mount any day! I've ridden them both, didn't see much difference form my '96 to an '04 as far as vibes. I guess it's a personal preference, or maybe some have just gotten soft...

I'd own another 883 if the chance came around I kinda enjoyed mine when I got it I was just getting back into riding and it was the most fun I'd ever had (I used to call it my lil barnstormer) I kept that thing almost 4 years until the XL50 came out and stole my heart... I do like the 1200 alot though (I miss the old school Ham Can too)

Just to answer your question... I have a 1999 883 XLH and a 2008 Ultra... Guess you could say both ends of the venue. I'm not knocking the 883 as you my think... I'm only saying what the local crowed says eithor outloud or under their breath. Most of it comes from ..... and I do mean most of the slander comes from "previous Sportster owners" whohave moved onto baggers etc. Unless you run with the baggers you may never hear the comments... On long rides the bagger guys are alway complaining on having to stop for gas or to have to carry all the gear the Sportser riders have to take along... Jackets, chaps etc. As a metter of fact, I would rather be riding my Sportster for the pure pleasure of riding!.. It's really more fun then my Ultra in the backroads and twisties and around town... To me the Ultra is more for going and coming long distances (ie, a bus with the feel of a bike). So don't take offence of the slander and comments as I don't... and I like the 883 but I don't like the reference to as a "starter bike" as many have stated...... It's a bike of "choice"............. Sorry, kinda got off topic..

Your local crowd is a bunch of close minded arseholes then. Sorry but, I ride with my local club too, 2 sporsters and 48 baggers and a few other assorted bikes... No one, and I mean NO ONE, knocks the sportsters in myclub. In fact all I hear is positive comments. "Damn, I wish I could do that with my bike" is the most frequent comment I hear. Generally if someone, anyone puts down your bike, whether it be a sportster or a bagger, or honda, or whatever..it's because they have a small dick.

When I was looking for my first H-D, I was just coming off owning a Kawasaki Vulcan 800 Classic (it acutally got written off in an accident and left me with a broken leg). Anyway, the Vulcan was a great bike with lots of power for its size...so I thought an 883 would be sufficient for my purposes of bombing around town with my buddies and taking the occasional highway trip now and then. Once I ran the numbers between and 883 and a 1200, I decided that the 1200 was the way to go, even if you didn't need all the extra power, it's still better to have it there just in case, rather than deciding 6 months down the road that you need a 1200 conversion kit and going through all that extra work. Plus, I was sold on the 1200C's vast array of chrome so that was another nail in the coffin for me.

I think the 883 Low looks bad ***....that's what I would by if I was in the market for a new bike and wanted an 883. Don't ever let people tell you that 883's are for girls. Your bike is YOUR bike and that's the only thing that matters. Plus, with the amount of companies around like Lick's Custom Cycles and Pipe Dreamz, which dedicate the majority of their aftermarket accessories to Sportsters, you'll have no problem making your ride look hotter than any Softail or Dyna out there. Sportsters kick *** in general. In my opinion, there is not a nicer or more well proportioned machine produced by H-D.

I chose the latest generation; FI & Rubber Mounted. People say the previous ones being lighter were easier to ride and were faster. That sounds like rider cop-out to me. Why *wouldn't* you want to ride a smoother, more modern and efficient bike if you could? Especially buying used, the price differences are negligible.
