well i finally saved up enough tosome apes on . it's either between 13 or 16 inch bars what do you guys think , any info or pics would be helpful, i have an 05 custom and plan on keeping the stock risers at least for now.. thanks
I am looking at doing apes myself, I made a set out of cardboard to check fitment. It's hard to say what size you need, it depends on how big you are, how high you want your hands etc.
I am going to change out the risers, I just don't like the way they look with the stock risers. That's another thing you need to think about, you said you are going to keep the stockers for now.....they are 4" I think so if you go with lower risers later your bars will be lower.
Personally, I'd say get rid of the risers. With apes on top of them, it just doesn't look right. Instead of a clean line, the risers sort of make it a weird angled thing going on there.
CharlieD has a nice bike (in signature above), but the risers look a bit out of place on it, with the apes. It just gives it a "broken line" look to me.
16" look great IMO on the Nightster but if you ride for an hour or more the arms get a little numb. I'm 5'10". I would probably go with 16" total (with risers) if I had it to do over.
I've got 13.5" on mine with 2" risers and it sits just perfectly. I'm 5' 9" with average arms. I can ride all day like this comfortably without losing feeling. I was thinking of going 16" but I think it would have been too much.
Just remember that the pullback of the stock risers will bring them closer, so depending on how you want to angle them, the length of 16"s might be a drawback.
ditch the riser, my humble opinion says it looks worse than ****. I have 18in on some drag specialties cheap 3in risers. And fly those apes straight up!!
Old brown pic and and a newer blue pic...
IfI would have another bike for longer tours and just used my Nightster for bar hoping, then I would get 16" apes.I just wanted to prevent having my arms go tired when taking those longer HWY trecks soI went with 12". On another note, not that it would have stopped me from doing it, but some states require that the bars don't go higher than shoulders so keep that in mind if you want to stay "legal".
