I got 21,000 miles out of my stock 21 inch.I ride hard and my daily rout has lots of curves. If you don't adjust your tire pressure on a regular basis, tread life will be short. You will get better grip from Avon and Metzler but the stock tire will last longer.
Sounds like you were not watchin the tire pressures. I got over 12000 out of my 21" dunlap.
I checked them once a week and very seldom needed to add air and then never more than 2lbs.
I have noticed that it seems that the majority of people who get the poor mileage live in the southern part of the US. I suspect the higher asphalt temps. combined with the small contact area of the 21" has a lot to due with the shorter tire life. Just my guess.
I happen to like the Avon Venom X Tires best. I had the stock Dunlop's on my 2005 and I also have a 21" Front and 16 rear. I put the 160 on the rear, doesn't rub at all, and in my opinion changes the look of the back of the bike quite a bit. The Avons seem to be wearing great and have felt solid through many different weather conditions, except i have never ridden my bike in snow or ice, I do live in Sunny Southern California.
I am running Michelin Commanders. So far, I like them a lot. At lower speeds, they don't feel much different that the Dunlops I was running before, but on the highway my sense is that they offer a better ride. Not sure how long they will last, but others tell me they last as long as Dunlops. Dealer says folks have been liking them. For cost, they were a tad less than Dunlops but that didn't drive my decision. I liked the looks of the tread and their proving history on the track. I guess they've been common metrics for a while now.
I just pulled a 21 " Dunlop off the front of my Deuce at 5900 miles it looked new. Needed new rear to correct a leak and went with 880 Metzelers. They do ride a bit better, do not wander in road ruts. It actually took about 100 miles to become accustomed to the lighter more responsive steering. I rode in rain today for the first time and although I do not push it on wet road it did feel better planted whereas the Dunlops felt slippery when wet. Be glad you have Sportster as rear Deuce was very $$$. I had Metzelers on my 97 1200 and felt good. Avons or Metzeler are known to be better ...lose the Dunlops and you will be glad...well worth the small price difference. I am scratching my head about your front tire rapid wear.....John
