hey everyone, i have a 2002 883C, and last summer i reset the trip odometer, and ever since then the speedometer hasn't worked, and since the speedometer doesn't work the odometer also isn't working, any ideas on what the problem is? do i have to replace the whole speedometer as a unit? and if so how will i put the miles on the bike?
Does it still light up when the ignition is turned on?
Approximately how many miles or how many times have you turned it off & on again since you first noticed the issue?
Was it ever miss-reading before?
Have you/has the speedo sensor been changed?
Have you ever seen the color of the transmission fluid?
Was there ever metal chips on the tranny drain plug?
Speedometer is replaced as a unit.. Too bad you didn't post this earlier as I just sold a brand new one for a 99-03.. for $70.00.. I purchased it new on ebay for $100.00 because of my impulsive buying habits and was after the chrome ring rather then the flat black one I had.. However, changed my mind and sold.
yes it still lights up, and i have turned it on and off atleast 20times since that has happened, and as far as i know it was never miss-reading it always seemed right on, i have not nor do i beleive that the speedo sensor has been changed. the color of the trans fluid looked like a good color, and i just replaced the trans fluid also, but there were not any metal shavings on the trans drain plug.
no haven't checked to see if the cable is broken or loose yet, im trying to sell it, and i didn't want to take it all apart until i had a good idea on what the problem could be
If it lights up & does not read it is often the sensor.
The other questions are the things that lead to the sensor going.
The sensor is a bitc# to get at & they are not cheap. I'm on my third.
All the wires to the speedo are in the same heat shrinked tube.
There is not much to check other than the connector under your seat.
And if you replace it you can just replace the ACTUAL speedo instead of everything. But you'll have to take it in with your last known mileage to the stealer to have HD set the new one.
With the ignition key turned to the off position, hold in the trip reset button and then turn on the ignition switch.... that should start displaying you "fault codes. with the key still turn on you can release the trip reset button and you should be reading the first code. continued on and release pressing will step you through all the fault codes.. If that works then the speedometer is probably alright..
The next step would be to check the wiring connection that leads to the pickup sensor... could be loose or corroded..
My bike is a 99 and I once pinched the speedometer cable installing a chrome light brow hood cover. Just track the wire down from the speedometer to the main harness and then the lead down to the sensor..
