I want to wrap the exhaust on my Nightster, but need some tips. I look around in cyberspace, but couldn't find very much helpful info. Anyone who has wrapped their pipes have any suggestions or tips? I'm mechanically challeneged so I need all the help that I can get
Test fit the wrap first. Then cut it just a tad longer then you think you'll need. You can also get a spray bottle and mist it while wrapping to make it easier to bend and fold. I used stainless steel bailing wire to secure it. It was a lot better than clamps, IMO. Don't rush it, either. It just takes a bit of time.....a 2nd set of hands will be very helpfull, too.
Here is a photo of how it looks secured with stainless wire...
soak the wrap (it will keep it from fraying and allow you to stretch it tight) then, clamp it up where the pipe meets the motor, put on some rubber gloves, start wrapping, i usually use 2 in or 1 3/4 when i wrap then i do a 3/4 over lap... get to the end and clamp again. put back on and start bike (it will smoke and smell bad but that is normal) after it is completely dry... pull back off the pipes and shoot them with some high heat temp paint (*1200 degree at least) this will keep the wraps color... then reinstall... i do all this with 2 people and run the wrap around a pole to get some good leverage so i can really wrap it tight... if it is loose at all it will fray...
I Started mine at the back of the pipe and didn't use anything on it. Wrapped it to the top where it meet the motor and used stainless wire to secure it there. I did wet it also.
So far the only part that has gone bad is where i hit a blue street reflector in a hard right turn. Damaged some of the wrap but I spray painted the crap out of it and it is all good now. that one scared the crap out of me by the way.
only reason you want to start at the top and go back is that will allow for when your legs rub it from coming off the pegs to the ground it will nto fray the wrap... plus, you would be amazed as to what the wind will do going against a rev wrap... i have done it before and had to re do them... man i love the look of a nightster with wrapped pipes Werbecki love the cream wheels!!!
i wrapped a set on a 96 shadow looked pretty damn good didnt wet em though and that was a over a year ago started at the heads and went down used hose clamps but that was kinda the theme we were goin for we called the bike bucket o' bolts
