I'm also interested on where you found the info that standard duty shocks were recommended for 275 lbs. Every thing I have seen says 225 lbs. I never understood why Progressive uses a single weight limit for selecting their shocks. It seems like the shocks should be listed in min & max ratings and that there would be an overlap between the max range on the standards and the min. range on the heavy duties.
cHarley, I used the GAWR found in the OM (665 lbs, rear axle), right or wrong. At the bottom of the selection chart on Progressives site it states:
"HD indicates that part numbers in this row are Heavy Duty applications for this bike model. Heavy Duty Applications are recommended for bikes that are operated at or near the manufacturer’s maximum load rating over 50% of the time."
It worked for me, as the shocks aren't to stiff, nor do they hop around.

Right or wrong, your way obviously worked out. I'm 220 and occasionally ride 2up. I went with the HD's based on being that close to their 225 lb. recommendation. Hell I'm liable to gain a few lbs I wish I had just used the standard duty shocks now. Progressive's selection help leaves a lot to be desired.

I never did find the rider weight data on their site, or I just overlooked it in my research. It took me a while to decide and everyone here and on other forums were saying HD, so that had me convince that at my weight, I should go with the HD. Then I started noticing that most were going with a shorter shock length, either to get a lower ride, or the shorter ones were stock,so it kind of made sense they would need a stiffer shock to keep from bottoming. Since I was staying with the stock length for the Roadster, I just took a chance and got the standard duty.
makes total sense to me. You're not lowering, so, why go for the hd's if you don't need to.
Sounds like you looked into this well before making the jump.
I'm at the lowest size shocks available from progressive (11inch). I went hd's to make certain that I won't be bottoming out. I've heard of people my own weight bottoming out the 11inch standard duty shocks.
The HD's are a bit stiffer than stock, yes... but not bad at all.
Good review, thanks tor posting. The 13.5" shocks on your roadster have way more travel than the customs & let you stay with the slightly softer spring. I am glad I put the 12" on my Custom, the extra bit of travelgives my 230 lb a nice ride-
The stock springs were so bad I considered wearing a mouthpiece to keep me from knocking myself out from my teeth slamming together when bottoming out[:@][:@]
Befor I got my 412's I cald Progressive. I'm 185lbs ride solo. I told them I wanted as smooth of a ride as I could get with out bottoming outwith 412, on my 06 1200-C. He said to go with 12.5" S-D, he said the H-D would be to stiff. man was he right, I think the S-D are to stiff. I know it handles better, and it don't bottom out no more, but as for a smoother ride, I don't feel much deference.
I did get a smoother ride on the front with Progressive fork springs I really like them...

I agree, it isn'tsilky smoother, but the backbone jarring thumpwhen hitting a cut in the asphalt, is gone now, for me anyway. I think to get that silky smooth ride, it would take lots of green for some premium shocks.
I put 12" HD 412's on mine and I ride two up on the load limit most of the time.
I will have to go to 13 1/2" HD's as It still bottoms on the belt guard from time to time even on the hardest setting.
But riding solo the 12" HD 412's are perfect for me and the bike handles far better than with stock shocks
Thanks for all the input from this tread. I've been trying to decide onwhich progressive to go with. I talked to the guys at Eastern performance and they said the 412's are a good shock, the suspension on a sporty is what it is, and to spend alot of $$ on the 440's might help, but with the smaller tire on the sportster and the single swingarm the 412's are a big improvement for a lot less cake
